As we know, this will not stop illegal immigrants or the cash-in-hand black market! So, next, they'll say that they will need to ban cash to take away the incentive to come here! All to stop illegal immigration, which for centuries we've been able to do without problem...

Excellent article, well written, presented and argued. All too easy to imagine, and at this point anyone who thinks that any government or social institution has your best interests at heart is more than a fool, they're dangerously delusional and need locking up in any asylum with the key being thrown away until such time as they come to their senses, or die of old age...

This is a continuation of a trend that Blair started and has been continued by every goverment since. For example, in 2015 George Osborne approved new powers for HMRC to raid bank accounts directly without the need to obtain a court order. The long time protection against state overreach was abandoned. At the time HMRC said the new power would only be used in the most extreme cases of which there was said to be 17 owing hundreds of thousands of pounds. Earlier this week HMRC said it would raid the account of anyone owing more than £1000.

Power is never given back and always extends eventually. That we are heading to a Chinese style social credit system is not a fevered conspiracy theory but an accurate assessment of how goverment power works. We had a chilling dose of that during Covid.

Authoritarian Britain must be resisted vigorously.

I could weep. And if they bring this in then, no doubt, we will all be crying in a few years (months?).

Hi Laura, I completely agree with what you say, but here is my problem, in a nutshell....People in this country are THAT stupid because they are cheerfully urging on their own demise, and that fact that a majority think that this is a good idea shows the depths of imbecility that we are dealing with here - they simPly cannot see further than their nose, much less comprehend that the government is not their friend!

How do you deal with this? How do you counteract such obtuseness when those cheering it on are seemingly perfectly happy to cut their own throats!!!!!!

Iwould question whether the majority are in favour. I suspect its exaggerated misinformation, much like the covid deaths. Sheep tend to follow other sheep...

And it's a thing almost all over the world at this point, sadly.

Where do you even go now, if you want to break free from this?

OMG Laura that was such an inspiring piece of commentary! You are able to articulate just what many of us are thinking! The good thing is Digital ID will not happen as this hapless government could not get it off the ground for 3-5 years to design, develop and deploy such a system by which time they will be long gone from power!

its a very bad idea that will lead to state surveilance it must be stopped...be sure to check out a petition on the uk government and parliament petition page..call an immediate general election it currently has 934,363, signatures it urgently needs many more and YOU can help in getting them first be sure to sign it and most importantly be sure to reshare it widely all over the uk wales/england/northern ireland/ scotland/.... with as many like minded people as you possibly can and be sure to ask each one of them to do exactly the same as im asking you to do......a million signatures is within sight

The A holes must be crapping themselves this could bring down the whole house of cards … they lie with every breath so we know immigration has nothing to do with it. Good read thanks.

It is a hard no from me.

Digital ID could be used to control and limit our freedoms. It could be hacked and falls down the minute the internet and power fails.

Don’t let them fool you into thinking this would be a good idea at any level. There is too much control and surveillance already.

Do not comply.

Anti-everything extremists like Big Brother Watch don’t even want cctv to catch paedophiles, so I’ll discount their opinion entirely! However your argument that ID cards will be mostly ineffective is persuasive. I, like most, support the concept of ID cards but there needs to be convincing evidence that they will work and not be another mammoth waste of public money.

Most? I think you may find that's a bit wide of the mark. Absolutely right that it is another colossal waste of public money - and more syphoning into the pockets of their mates.

You need to be careful not to conflate a physical ID card with digital ID.
